Zambia: Interview with Basement Entertainment | LusakaTimes.com

TIME PUBLISHED - Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:47 pm

Basement Entertainment is a?UK based Zambian events management and promotions company set out to?promote Zambian cultures and performing acts in the UK as well as?parts of Europe.

KAPA187:? ??How did Basement entertainment come about?

Basement entertainment: Wow, this takes us back; we came about out of the desire to do things differently and put the fun back into Djing.
In the early 2000s there was a group of us young Zambians, mostly students who used to come together at a friend?s flat at weekends and just play music the way we liked, putting our own stamp, swag and identity on it. Those early days developed our style, when you see us ?performing?; you get a glimpse of how we chill.

Bugz Money ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??DJ Snypa

The founder members of the crew are Mr. Evans Miyanda (Team Patron), Oscar Miyanda (DJ Snypa), Harry Miyanda (Bugz Money), Milton Besa (DJ Milton Besa)?. ha ha ha?the only DJ who does not want a DJing name?lol! Other guys later joined us John Chinode Chisengalumbwe (Mc Jc Chinode II), Shawn L Sibamba (Big Shawn), Ray Nyakuchena (DJ Raypower our first Dual Zambia/Zimbabwean team member) and Andre Gordon (DJ Dre, our first Caribbean team member) with others on rotation across the UK. Our virtual existence in Zambia shall soon be a reality once our current mini team in Lusaka has completed logistical planning to operate in Zambia.

DJ Dre ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? DJ?Ray power?

It was actually at Milton?s penthouse in South East London (he lived above a shop, typical student accommodation?.ha ha ha.) where we came up with the name because his place felt like a basement though it was an upstairs flat and for some reason we were always there socializing, he could never get rid of us.

KAPA187:? ??What services do you provide?

Basement entertainment: We started out as DJs and were known as the Basement crew, until we branched out to music production when we co- produced Zambian musician TY2?s UK music project titled Nu Beginin? (Featuring his hit love song NIKUKONDE) in 2008, produced and recorded at Iguana studios in Brixton, South London at which time we changed our name to Basement Entertainment, which felt more business like, well, or so we thought.

Amongst other services, we provide public announcement systems on a corporate level e.g. one used during President Michael Sata recent visited to the UK, at the UK Zambian community dinner reception hosted at the Zambian high commissioner?s residence. We also provide music entertainment services, boasting of an all out experienced international DJ line-up, capable of handling any occasion around the world plus event venues, added to that, our in-house voice over artists, presenters with various event management and promotions solutions are on hand to provide a service, be it Zambian or other through our business networks across the UK. We also have an online presence where we host our very own online radio show (THE SHOW) at?http://www.basemententertainment.co.uk/?showcasing Zambian music and Dancehall music as enjoyed in the UK anchored by DJ Snypa, DJ Dre and Mc John Chinode II, supported by a live channel broadcast on Aggie rounds radio, UK.

Outside all these activities we work as volunteers with a UK based charity Butterfly tree that is headed by Jane Kay Bailey; Supporting rural communities in Zambia decimated by the HIV/Aids pandemic, providing safe water, feeding programs, improved health and education facilities with an orphan sponsorship program as well as supporting the fight against malaria in Zambia where together with the charity released a song titled ?Change For The Better? performed by Ty2, Kaufela, Late Crystal Shawn and Lillian Mweene produced and recorded at raising sound studios in Livingston, Zambia. (Find out more on how you can help atwww.thebutterflytree.org.uk)

You could say we are all round entertainers but also with a social responsibility for those in need back in Zambia.

KAPA187:? ?What is your opinion on the music industry in Zambia?

Basement entertainment: The scene is heading in the right the direction, we are particularly impressed with the strides made by Zambian hip hop, the industry now gets it, they are establishing an identity founded on being Zambian, they are not trying to imitate the American scene which is a major plus.

The management side of things still poor but there is room for it to develop; we think artist management and the industry regulatory system as a whole is still in its infancy. Zambian musicians are VERY creative and that is what they should concentrate on, issues like PR, marketing, legal and in general artist management should be handled by someone else not a friend. We are not saying it is not happening right now, we are just saying that there is a scope for growth and improvement.

KAPA187:? ?Which artists do you think are the best at this moment?

Basement entertainment: Truth be told, there far too many to mention.

KAPA187:? ?How do you promote Zambian music in UK, how has been the response?

Basement entertainment: We have a major platform with our online radio show as well as our mobile disco team with affiliation to some major UK radios and clubs. The response has been overwhelming, the emails, comments on our site and the feeling we get when we play out shows how much the music is loved by Zambians across the UK though this trend has grown as well within other communities where we have delivered the sounds from Zambia. We think mostly out of nostalgia, it is that connection with home. Zambians in the UK appreciate the music even more than people in Zambia especially judging by the requests we get as well as the missing home factor..

KAPA187:? ?Do you think Zambian comedians get enough exposure as compared to musicians?

Basement entertainment: Music is universal as they say; it is that factor that makes it more penetrative. Comedy is relative and if you cannot relate, it just is not funny. Issues like language are just some of the limiting factor or a major barrier for it to be accessible especially out here in the UK.

To make that transition from performing on the local scene to the international scene is not as easy for comedians as it is for Musicians that is the challenge.

KAPA187:? ?Who are some of your favorite Zambian Comedians?

Basement entertainment: Our very own Mc John Chinode II, you can catch him on our radio show. We like Bob Nkosha, Bikiloni and Diffikoti to mention but afew.

KAPA187:? ?It would seem easier to promote music internationally than a comedy act, due to cultural differences, what is your approach to promoting them and making sure they get enough exposure

Basement entertainment: We can only do so much; the onerous is pretty much on the artists themselves and their management companies. We can only expose what they present to us, we feel they need to really work on this aspect; they need to push and get their stuff out there where even a local Nigerian, English Man or Jamaican can relate.

KAPA187:? ?What other art forms do you cater to?

Basement entertainment: The Art of Life and staying safe especially amongst the youth, live by the rules. They are there for a reason to stay alive! Lol!

KAPA187:? ?How can the artists? get in touch with you?

Basement entertainment: Through our official website?www.basemententertainment.co.uk?or email?[email?protected]?as well as Facebook or Twitter.

KAPA187:? ?Any last words?.

Basement entertainment: Zambians world over should always remember Local is better. There is only one Zambia in the world which we all know is not going anywhere for generations to come. Let us, as Zambians support and stand by what?s Zambian if our industry is to move forward. Beside Zambia is the only home we have, lets be proud of the furniture we?ve put in it and in this case our entertainment industry it not always that international is better.

Finally, we are always looking for Zambian DJ?s and presenters for various community projects in your location, if anyone out there is interested contact us.

Arctic melt, smash and grab ahead

Humanity's rapacious reaction to the Arctic ice minimum is depressingly predictable

SHELL'S push to open up the Arctic Ocean is not going well. Having already scaled back its plans, it may be prevented from exploratory drilling in the Beaufort Sea this year. The reason? Whaling takes priority.

With the Arctic sea ice at its lowest for at least 3 million years (see "Arctic ice low heralds end of 3-million-year cover"), the rush to exploit hitherto inaccessible resources - principally oil, fish and minerals - is well and truly on. The massive melt constitutes an environmental disaster for many of the world's inhabitants, to say nothing of its flora and fauna (see "What ice-free summers will mean for Arctic life"), but for some people, it is simply a commercial opportunity.

The interest groups vying for the Arctic's wealth are likely to intersect in unprecedented ways. Shell's deferral to native Alaskans, whose traditional hunting season it is obliged to respect, is a portent of esoteric clashes to come.

The melting of the Arctic ice has long been forecast. Now that it is under way with a vengeance, the less predictable consequences of humanity's impact on the climate will become clearer. Many will be startling for all concerned; short-term gains aside, few are likely to enrich our lives. Welcome to the age of global warming.

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers are stocking up for the stretch run with some new, expensive players who couldn't help the Boston Red Sox make it to the postseason this year or last.

The Dodgers acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and injured outfielder Carl Crawford from Boston on Saturday, hoping to boost their playoff hopes by taking on the underperforming and high-priced stars who failed to thrive in a fractious Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston also sent infielder Nick Punto and about $11 million in cash to Los Angeles in the nine-player trade that was the biggest in Dodgers history. In return, the Red Sox got first baseman James Loney, pitcher Allen Webster, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and two players to be named while shedding more than $250 million in salaries through 2018.

"We understand that you have to spend money to be good in this league," said Magic Johnson, the former NBA star who is part of the rich new Dodgers ownership group that has dramatically revamped their roster in the last month.

"When we came in, we made it clear that we want to build the Dodgers back to what they once were," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said.

Los Angeles, which trailed the San Francisco Giants in the NL West by three games at the time of the trade, has in the past month acquired shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Shane Victorino, starter Joe Blanton and reliever Brandon League. The latest deal comes less than a week before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason.

"It's just exciting," Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp said. "Everybody wants to win, and the guys up there are really making a statement and showing us that they want to win just as bad as we do."

For the Red Sox, who entered the night 13? games back in the AL East, the trade signaled a concession for 2012 and a chance to rebuild without hefty contracts given during an undisciplined foray into free agency that, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington conceded, has not worked out.

"It gives us an opportunity to build the next great Red Sox team," Cherington said. "We just felt like to get to be a team we believe in and a team the fans deserve, to sustain winning year after year, it was going to take something more than cosmetic changes. It was going to take something bold."

The Red Sox will save $261 million in salaries through 2018, plus a few million more for the rest of this season. Boston will send $11 million going to the Dodgers as part of the deal, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because the financial terms were not public.

"The bottom line is we haven't won enough games. That goes back to last September," Cherington said. "We just haven't performed on the field. As a team we haven't performed. ... This is not about the four players we gave up ? anything particularly they did wrong. We just didn't perform as a team."

Beckett was a key part of the team that won the 2007 World Series, but he was also the ringleader last year when the ballclub went 7-20 in September and missed a playoff spot on the final day of the season. Reports of players drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games surfaced afterward, and Beckett's haughty demeanor ? and rising ERA ? continued to alienate fans.

The 2003 World Series MVP with the Florida Marlins, Beckett now moves from fried chicken to the land of In-N-Out Burger, bringing with him a pair of other players who were not productive enough to justify their contracts. Beckett was due $31.5 million over the next two years; Gonzalez has $127 million coming through 2018; Crawford is due $102.5 million over the next five seasons.

Both Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein after the September collapse, and manager Bobby Valentine, who was brought in to replace Terry Francona, defended their departing players. But Valentine agreed that change was needed in the clubhouse.

"Yes. It was necessary," he said. "(It) just didn't seem like it mixed as well as it should."

Players traded in August have to first pass through waivers. Any team with a worse record than Los Angeles could have claimed Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford before the Dodgers, but it would have had to pick up their contracts.

Instead, the teams worked out a deal that reshuffled the NL West race and had the rest of baseball talking, too.

"It's surprising," New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're not used to seeing that many big names go in one trade ? a bunch of All-Stars, guys who have been in World Series and played at a very high level."

Red Sox players said before Saturday night's game against Kansas City that they were surprised to see their longtime teammates gone in a deal that came together quickly. Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford were already on their way to Los Angeles on Saturday, according to a picture Punto posted on Twitter; Boston pitcher John Lackey had already claimed Beckett's locker, pulling rank over Clay Buchholz.

"Nothing surprises me in this game," Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross in the Fenway Park clubhouse, where the nameplates had already been removed from his former teammates' lockers. "This isn't your normal trade. This is a blockbuster deal that will probably go down as one of the biggest, but it still doesn't surprise me."

Gonzalez, a former San Diego Padres star, said on Twitter in English and Spanish that he was excited to get back to California. Beckett joined the social media site to thank Red Sox fans, writing "Even in the tough times I ran into so many wonderful people that were so awesome I'm Greatly appreciative to all of you."

The 32-year-old Beckett is 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts this season. A three-time All-Star, he is 130-92 lifetime with a 3.93 ERA.

Gonzalez, 30, is a four-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner. He hit .300 with 15 home runs and 86 RBIs this season, his second since being traded by San Diego to Boston.

Crawford, at 31, hit .282 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games this season. He had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow this week and is expected to take six to nine months to recover. Crawford was a four-time All-Star with Tampa Bay before signing with Boston.

The 34-year-old Punto hit .200 with one homer and 10 RBIs as a backup.

Loney hit .254 with four homers and 33 RBIs for the Dodgers this season. At 28, he'd spent his whole career in Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old DeJesus was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He hit .273 in 23 games for the Dodgers this year. Webster, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 6-8 with a 3.55 ERA at Double-A Chattanooga.

The Red Sox and Dodgers haven't made a lot of deals over the years. Perhaps the most notable came in the summer of 1939 when Boston sent a minor leaguer to Brooklyn: future Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese.

Analysts cut 2012 PC, chip shipment forecasts

NEW YORK (AP) ? What once looked like a good year for computers and chips has now fizzled, say researchers.

IHS iSuppli said Friday that global semiconductor chip shipments are set to fall by 0.1 percent this year. That's down from a previous forecast for growth of up to 3 percent. It's the first annual decline since recession-colored 2009.

ISuppli said shipments slowed noticeably compared to normal seasonal patterns in the April to June period. The weak global economy is one culprit, but most of the slowdown is in chips for PCs, iSuppli said.

IDC, another research firm, detects the slowdown in the PC market, too. It expects PC shipments to grow just 0.9 percent this year. That's down from the firm's forecast of 5 percent growth issued in March.

IDC says sales have been weak so far this year, and a bounce from the imminent release of Microsoft's Windows 8 may not be as strong as it had expected.

"Buyers must acclimate themselves to an operating system that is a dramatic departure from existing PC paradigms. The PC ecosystem faces some work to properly educate the market," said analyst Jay Chou.

On Wednesday, Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's largest maker of PCs, said its PC sales fell by 10 percent from the same time last year. CEO Meg Whitman attributed the decline to fierce price competition, a growing preference for tablet computers and smartphones, and postponed purchases among buyers waiting for the release of Windows 8 on October 26.

Both IDC and iSuppli predict better luck for the high-tech industry in 2013. IDC sees PC shipments growing 6.5 percent. ISuppli projects a 9 percent jump in chip shipments, provided the global economy manages to avoid obstacles like slowing growth in China and fiscal turmoil in the U.S.

A thoroughly modern take on the plot of Hamlet which usesShakespeare?s original words as the action plays out as seen through the prismof the central character?s mentally besieged consciousness.

This ?collage? as Marowitz termsit, unfolds in a stream of consciousness, as characters appear and disappearfrom the stage at random as Hamlet conjures up his memories and imaginings ofthem.? SAIC Helping Canada Province Run EHR System; Steve Comber Comments

SAIC Canada will continue helping a Canadian province implement and maintain an electronic health record system, the company announced Thursday.

The company won a prime three-year contract to provide technology and applications for Saskatchewan?s EHR system, associated components, other health information systems and related databases.

EHealth Saskatchewan, a crown corporation tasked with running the province?s EHR system, and the company have worked together previously to get the system running, said Steve Comber, a senior vice president and head of the health solutions business unit.

The $16 million contract with eHealth Saskatchewan is a single-award indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award, the company said.

In the U.S., SAIC recently acquired a commercial EHR integrator with plans to use this acquisition to compete in the federal health IT market.

Conrad Black may try to reopen U.S. convictions before Order of Canada: federal lawyers

Federal lawyers say Conrad Black may try to ?re-litigate? his U.S. criminal convictions if allowed to orally argue before an advisory council reviewing his membership in the Order of Canada.

Mr. Black, 67, is asking Federal Court to force the advisory council to allow him to present his case in person as it decides whether to recommend revocation of the prestigious award he received in 1990.

More Related to this Story

Documents filed in court prior to Mr. Black?s hearing Friday show government lawyers plan to argue there is no legal reason the former media magnate can?t file written representations, as per council rules.

They say the order?s 11-member council is not the right venue if Mr. Black intends to use his appearance to argue it should ?reconsider the merits? of his convictions as part of the review process.

The council can recommend members of the order be stripped of their status, but the final decisions rests with Canada?s Governor General.

Mr. Black was convicted in the U.S. of fraud and obstruction of justice while he was head of media giant Hollinger International.

He served 37 months of a 42-month sentence, but contends he was victimized by the American justice system, and that Canadian courts would never have convicted him.

Mr. Black was not immediately available for comment.

Losing stream in our battle to predict and prevent invasive species

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Invasive species -- plants, animals, and microbes introduced to regions beyond their native range -- carry a global price tag of $1.4 trillion dollars. They are responsible for the loss of natural resources and biodiversity, damages to infrastructure, and an uptick in infectious diseases.

Not all non-native species pose a threat. Scientists around the world have spent the last several decades teasing apart the conditions that set the stage for debilitating invaders, like giant hogweed, zebra mussels, or gray squirrels. A number of hypotheses have emerged to help predict how natural areas will respond to introduced plants, animals, and microbes.

An analysis of 371 invasion studies using six dominant invasion hypotheses has revealed their predictive power is weakening. The paper's authors -- Jonathan Jeschke, Lorena G?mez Aparicio, Sylvia Haider, Tina Heger, Christopher Lortie, Petr Py?ek, and David Strayer -- found empirical support for all six hypotheses declining, with recent studies showing the lowest levels of support. Hypotheses that were too broad or omitted ecosystem interactions fared among the worst, plants proved easier to predict than animals, and, contrary to popular belief, diverse ecosystems were not inherently resistant against invaders. The study was published in the open-access journal NeoBiota.

The paper's authors comment: "The observed decline effect means our confidence in making sound policy and management decisions based on the six analyzed hypotheses is lower today than it was in the past. Scientists were overly optimistic about the predictive power of these hypotheses. Given that invasive species are an expensive and ever growing problem, this is a situation that needs to be addressed."

Similar "decline effects" have been noted in other disciplines, among them pharmacological research, psychology, and animal behavior. The effect has been attributed to publication bias, inadequate sample sizes, and a tendency of early tests of hypotheses to pick study organisms or systems where positive results are expected.

Lead author Jonathan Jeschke, of Technische Universit?t M?nchen, concludes: "The decline effect is both worrying and fascinating. It's a phenomenon that should be investigated across disciplines, as medical and psychological researchers have shown its effects can be strong, and it can distort the predictive power of hypotheses."

The paper's authors offer four solutions to improve current hypotheses in invasion biology:

(1) Existing gaps in empirical tests of hypotheses should be filled. The study revealed crucial gaps in empirical studies, showing that most studies have focused on terrestrial plants but have ignored other organisms and aquatic habitats.

(2) Existing hypotheses should be specified for groups of organisms and habitats.

(3) Interactions of invasive species with their new ecosystems should be regularly considered. The study shows that hypotheses considering such interactions are better supported by empirical evidence than other hypotheses.

(4) Revised hypotheses should be rejected if they do not work. Those hypotheses that still lack empirical support after specification for groups of organisms and habitats (solution 2), consideration of invader-ecosystem interactions (solution 3), or another form of revision should be discarded. Scientists should not waste time and resources to continue working with these hypotheses. Instead, fresh ideas and novel hypotheses are needed to further our understanding of biological invasions -- something that is essential to effective management in today's rapidly changing world.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Several companies that sell advertising have been reporting their quarterly earnings. Here are highlights from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:

? July 16: Gannett Co. says advertising demand was "uneven" and "choppy." Ad revenue at Gannett's newspaper publishing segment fell 8 percent to $594 million. Broadcasting revenue climbed 11 percent to $205 million, helped by stronger political and auto-related TV advertising, as well as growth at Gannett's Captivate business, which shows ads in elevators. The company expects the Olympics and political spending to bolster results in the second half of the year.

? July 17: Yahoo Inc. says revenue for the latest quarter dipped 1 percent to $1.22 billion. After taking out ad commissions, Yahoo's net revenue totaled $1.08 billion. That figure fell about $16 million below analyst estimates. The net revenue, a focal point for investors, was slightly higher than the same time last year. That marked the second consecutive quarter that Yahoo had posted modestly higher net revenue.

Omnicom Group Inc., which owns marketing agencies, says its U.S. business helped lift second-quarter net income 1.5 percent, making up for a decline overseas. Domestic revenue grew 5.4 percent, while international revenue fell 1.3 percent.

? July 19: Google Inc's earnings hit analysts' target as refinements to the company's Internet search technology lured more Web surfers to click on its revenue-producing ads. Google's revenue, excluding that from a recent Motorola purchase, stood at $8.36 billion after subtracting the ad commissions paid to its advertising partners. That was about $70 million below analyst projections. The number of total clicks on Google's ads during the second quarter increased 42 percent from the same time last year. The increasing volume in clicks helped Google shake off a deepening decline in its ad prices.

Microsoft Corp. takes a $6.2 billion accounting charge because its 2007 purchase of online ad service aQuantive hasn't yielded the returns envisioned by management. With that, Microsoft's online services division reported a loss of $6.7 billion, compared with a loss of $745 million a year ago. Revenue fell 8 percent to $735 million.

? July 25: AOL Inc. reports stronger-than-expected revenue and its fifth straight quarter of advertising growth ? signs that its efforts to turn its business around are starting to pay off. AOL's advertising revenue grew 6 percent to $338 million.

IAC/InterActiveCorp reports better-than-expected results for the second quarter thanks to sharply higher revenue from its family of websites and applications. Revenue from IAC's search segment, which includes ads and applications, grew 46 percent to $349 million.

? July 26: Interpublic Group of Cos., a holding company for advertising and marketing agencies, says second-quarter net income fell 3 percent, hurt by some U.S. account losses in 2011 and the stronger dollar. Account losses included consumer products maker S.C. Johnson & Son Inc.

The New York Times Co. reports that second-quarter revenue increased slightly. Most of the revenue gain stemmed from higher newspaper circulation, especially in its digital editions. That helped to offset advertising revenue declines. The company says its advertising revenue decreased 7 percent to $244 million.

Meredith Corp., publisher of Better Homes and Gardens and Fitness magazines, says advertising revenue rose 11 percent to $210.3 million, helped by the acquisitions of the Allrecipes.com, EveryDay with Rachael Ray and FamilyFun brands.

? July 31: Discovery Communications Inc. says ad revenue grew 7 percent in the U.S. thanks to higher pricing, while ad revenue grew 11 percent abroad.

? Aug. 1: Time Warner Inc. says ad revenue at its TV networks increased 2 percent largely because of higher ad rates and an increase in the number of NBA games shown on its channels. But ad revenue at news networks in the U.S. and entertainment networks abroad fell. Ad revenue at the Time Inc. magazine division fell 7 percent. The company says ad sales may be slower in the current quarter partly because advertisers are diverting money to the Olympics. It also expects to be showing fewer baseball games during the quarter, but that will be made up with a heavier fourth-quarter schedule.

Comcast Corp. says ad revenue at NBCUniversal cable networks increased 4 percent. The networks include CNBC, MSNBC and Bravo.

TV station operator Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. says political ad spending has been three times higher than the company expected. Political ad revenue came to $11.4 million in the quarter, up from $1.2 million a year ago. Some of that is from buying additional stations.

? Aug. 2: CBS Corp. says advertising revenue fell 3 percent to $2.14 billion. In the current quarter, CEO Les Moonves conceded that the market for last-minute ad buys is showing some "softness". He blamed NBC's coverage of the London Olympics for taking away a lot of the available viewers and ad dollars.

Time Warner Cable Inc. says ad revenue increased 18 percent to $265 million, in part because of increased in political spending.

? Aug. 3: Viacom Inc. says U.S. advertising at its TV networks fell 7 percent. Viacom has been struggling with a ratings decline for key channels, particularly Nickelodeon. The company says the timing of certain awards shows also cut into advertising revenue. Last year, both shows were in the third quarter; this year, neither was.

? Aug. 7: The Walt Disney Co. says ad revenue at ESPN rose in the "mid-teen" percentages thanks to higher prices, sales volume and bigger audiences.

? Aug. 8: News Corp. says ad revenue at its U.S. cable channels grew 5 percent in the latest quarter, led by growth at its regional sports networks and National Geographic channels. Ad revenue at channels abroad grew 18 percent because of improving ad markets and viewership. Broadcast television saw lower national advertising revenue largely because of lower ratings for "American Idol."

Deep Brain Stimulation to Treat Obesity?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Scientific advances in understanding the "addiction circuitry" of the brain may lead to effective treatment for obesity using deep brain stimulation (DBS), according to a review article in the August issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Electrical brain stimulation targeting the "dysregulated reward circuitry" could make DBS -- already an accepted treatment for Parkinson's disease -- a new option for the difficult-to-treat problem of obesity. Dr. Alexander Taghva of Ohio State University and University of Southern California was lead author of the new review.

New Insights into 'Reward Circuitry'

Obesity is a major public health problem that is notoriously difficult to treat. Although various approaches can promote weight loss, patients typically gain weight soon after the end of treatment. Drug options have shown limited success, with several products removed from the market because of serious adverse effects. Bariatric surgery is effective in many cases of obesity but has a significant failure rate and is associated with side effects.

Drug treatments for obesity have targeted the homeostatic (self-regulating) mechanism regulating appetite and body weight. The homeostatic mechanism is thought to involve the "feeding center" in the hypothalamus, which produces hormones (such as leptin and insulin) that affect feeding behavior.

Initial experiments exploring DBS as a treatment for obesity have targeted the hypothalamus. However -- as with drug options focusing on the homeostatic mechanisms -- success has been limited.

Possible Role of DBS for Obesity

More recent studies have explored a different mechanism: specifically, the "reward circuitry," of the brain. Research has suggested that obesity is associated with a "relative imbalance" of the reward circuitry. Studies show that obese subjects -- like those with addictive behaviors -- are more impulsive and less able to delay gratification. The reward circuitry is intimately interconnected with the homeostatic mechanisms.

Together, these studies raise the possibility of new DBS approaches to the treatment of obesity. In DBS, a small electrode is surgically placed in a precise location in the brain. A mild electrical current is delivered to stimulate that area of the brain, with the goal of interrupting abnormal activity. Deep brain stimulation has become a standard and effective treatment for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

Just as stimulation of the brain areas responsible for abnormal movement helps "turn off" tremors in patients with Parkinson's disease, stimulation of the areas involved in dysregulated reward circuitry might be able to "turn off" abnormal feeding behaviors in obese patients. The authors outline evidence implicating several different brain areas involved in the brain's reward circuitry -- particularly the "frontostriatal circuitry" -- which could be useful targets for DBS.

Previous reports in individual patients have suggested that DBS performed for other reasons -- particularly severe obsessive-compulsive disorder -- have unexpectedly had unpredicted beneficial effects on addictive behaviors like smoking and overeating. Dr. Taghva and colleagues hope their review will open the way to further exploration of DBS as part of new and effective strategies for the treatment of obesity, perhaps in combination with therapies targeting the homeostatic mechanism.

'Undies over your head': Verdict, global protests for Russia's punk provocateur band

PARIS - They're asking for undies on heads, masks, and as much colour as possible. Organizers of protests in more than three dozen cities around the world are hoping for thousands to turn out in raucous support of the Russian femme provocateurs Pussy Riot, who are facing sentencing Friday in Moscow.

The three women in the band have been in jail for more than five months because of a prank in Moscow's main cathedral against Russia's Vladimir Putin, and face a maximum seven years in jail.

Celebrities including Paul McCartney, Madonna and Bjork have called for them to be freed, and protests are planned around the world Friday. The trial has attracted worldwide attention as an emblem of Russia's intolerance of dissent.

FAQ: Gold and silver have become great investments this past decade.

Q&A: Gold and silver have become great investments this past decade. Have you invested in any?

Even the mint has a hard time keeping up with orders now and at times, orders are delayed.
I was wondering? If maybe it is just a few rich people buying it all up , or if the general public are also doing what they can to protect what they have.
I have about half of my savings in gold and silver coins. I am a real gold (and silver) bug though, and have absolutely no faith in any paper currencies.
Are you invested in gold and silver? Just curious to see how many people are doing the same or if it is a relatively small percentage of the population.

goldsenze.com Answer:

I swing trade gold and silver using the ETF?s GLD and SLV. Paper currencies????? did you know the biggest holder of silver in the world is SLV? GLD is in the top 10. These holders are mostly professionals that know what they?re doing. Certainly they?re not crazy enough to put their money in coins?. which can easily become a problem because of limited demand when it?s time to sell.

Half your savings in silver and gold?? Simply not prudent. 3%-5%? that would be fine. Don?t trade on what you ?believe? unless you have a clear & quickly executable plan to get out on the downside. The earth will not always operate on what you believe or hope for.
